China blockades Taiwan as Pelosi leaves

The mission by the USA to start a hot war with China moved a step closer today as Nancy Pelosi left Taiwan. China has surrounded the island, effectively blockading the country during a six day military exercise involving live firing drills. Pelosi became the most senior official to visit Taiwan since 1997, when she landed in Taipei yesterday. She stated that “the US will not abandon its commitment to Taiwan” when meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen, she also said “today the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy. America’s determination to preserve democracy, here in Taiwan and around the world, remains ironclad.”

China opposes Taiwan having official exchanges with other countries. Taiwan views itself as an independent nation separate from mainland China, but Beijing sees it as a breakaway province that it has vowed to ‘reunify’. America recognised China in 1979 and, in order to establish diplomatic relations with the country, the USA acknowledged that Taiwan is a part of “One China”. However, Congress shortly afterwards passed a bill that compels the US to supply arms to Taiwan, arms that would be used should the country be attacked. President Xi Jinping said in 2019 that he reserves the right to ‘reunify’ Taiwan by force, should the need arise. Maybe China is just exercising its “right to reunify” after Pelosi’s reckless visit.
